Winchester College chess players meet British Champion David Howell

Thursday 29th April 2010

Four members of the Winchester College chess squad, accompanied by the master-in-charge, met the current British Champion and youngest Grandmaster in the UK, David Howell, at an event organised by the Southampton University Chess Club. David, 19, fresh from the high-point of his career so far - an unbeaten record against seven world-class players at the London Chess Classic in December 2009 - gave an hour-long masterclass on four of his most significant games, before taking on approximately 25 players, including the Winchester five (Ilya Iyengar, William Peck, Shan-Conrad Wolf, Nick Dagnall and Mr Hunt), in a simultaneous display in which he won all but three games. The College loaned most of the sets used for the simultaneous display.

Winchester College and Southampton University teams meet regularly in the Southampton Chess League, and this year the College A team has gained promotion to Division 2, where it will meet either or both of the University A and B teams.

More Hampshire success in SCCU U14/U-140 and Chiltern U-125

On Saturday 6th February, in the SCCU U14/U-140 tournament Hampshire won its most convincing victory to date against Sussex, winning 6.5-5.5 with the black pieces and an impressive 10-2 with the white. Hubert Au, Alfred Iu, Scott Leadbetter, James Butler and Robert Hwang all won both of their games. Although Hampshire has scored two wins against Sussex, the unbeaten Surrey progress to the final. Nevertheless, many congratulations to everyone who has played for the U14/U-140 team this year!

On the following day, Sunday 7th February, in the Chiltern U-125 League Hampshire won a nail-biting match against Buckinghamshire 7-5. Alan Willis, Mike Hemming, David Follows and Jon Hunt were all victorious for the adults (with Kev Lamb and David Nickerson winning their games by default and ending up playing each other!), while the juniors had a tougher time, with only Kumar Dixit and Tim Yung winning hard-fought but vital draws. Hampshire add this to their earlier victory against Berkshire, but will face Oxfordshire on their home turf on Saturday 6th March.

Hampshire finish 2nd at the NYCA U16 Championships 2009

Hampshire brought U16 and U12 teams to this year's NYCA Championships, and the U16 team scored 6 out of 8 points in each of the final two rounds to finish 2nd on 18½ points, behind Yorkshire who won with 21. Matthew Wilson (Aldworth Science College) won the U16 board prize for Board 4 with 3½ out of 4. Ilya Iyengar (Winchester College) on Board 1 also scored 3½, and Edmund Chui (Winchester College) shared the board prize for Board 7 with 2½ points. Congratulations to the entire U16 team, who receive individual trophies for their achievement: Ilya Iyengar, Hubert Au, Patrick Butler, Matthew Wilson, Shan-Conrad Wolf, Alfred Iu, Edmund Chui and Louis Payne. Hampshire will return to the U16/U12 Championships on Saturday 13th November 2010, when there will be vacancies in both the U16 and U12 sides. If you would like to play for Hampshire at the NYCA Championships next year, then please contact Jon Hunt (U16) or Joe French (U12).
